July is a wonderful time to experience Walnut Creek.
America 250 Celebration and Relay
On July 7, Walnut Creek served as an important stop along the America 250 Relay, a nationwide event taking place on the American Discovery Trail to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the United States. Participants traveling by foot across the country began their day in Walnut Creek with a community breakfast hosted by the City in partnership with Save Mount Diablo before embarking on one of the relay’s most challenging segments: a trek across Mount Diablo and through some of Contra Costa County’s most iconic open spaces. highlighting the natural beauty of our region and the significant role Walnut Creek plays in connecting people to the outdoors.
Entertainment Zone and Downtown Events
Downtown Walnut Creek will be buzzing with activity this summer as the Locust Street Festival has returned on July 8 and again August 5. This popular community event brings together live music, local food and beverages, artisan vendors, and family-friendly activities, drawing thousands of residents and visitors to the heart of downtown. City staff will be on hand throughout the festival, providing an opportunity for community members to learn about City programs and services.
This year’s July festival also marked the debut of Downtown Walnut Creek’s new Entertainment Zone, designed to support local businesses and create a more engaging downtown experience during approved special events. This new program represents an exciting opportunity to support economic vitality while maintaining the welcoming, community-oriented atmosphere that makes downtown Walnut Creek special.

Live music downtown continues with the Lesher Center’s Summer Sounds concert series, which returns to Rudney Plaza on July 9, July 16, and July 30. These free outdoor performances bring together residents of all ages for evenings of entertainment and
Youth Leadership Opportunities
July is an important month for youth civic engagement. Applications remain open through July 15 for the Youth Leadership Commission and Seat at the Table program, providing young residents with opportunities to develop leadership skills, learn about local government, and share their perspectives on issues affecting our community. Interested students are encouraged to apply and become involved in shaping Walnut Creek’s future.
Arts + Recreation Highlights
For those looking to explore their creative side, our Arts + Recreation department continues its Summer Nights Workshop Series with unique evening experiences designed for adults to learn, create, and connect. July offerings include a sustainable gelli plate printmaking workshop using repurposed materials and a watercolor paint-and-sip class celebrating the International Day of Friendship. Both workshops offer a welcoming opportunity to introduce yourself to new skills and enjoy a creative summer evening.
Emergency Preparedness
Summer is an ideal time to review emergency preparedness plans and take steps to stay safe during periods of extreme heat and elevated wildfire risk. Residents are encouraged to sign up for Walnut Creek’s emergency e-alert system by texting “WCALERT” to 888-777 to receive timely information during emergencies and public safety events. Additional resources, including guidance on preparing your home for wildfire season, are available through the Contra Costa Fire Protection District.
New Business
We welcome several new businesses to Walnut Creek, including restaurants Doppio Zero, Mensho, and Marafuku Ramen. Additional retail, fitness, and dining destinations are expected to open throughout the summer, including Milky Flakes, Masses (new location), Bacio di Latte, Ronbow, Matsu Yakitori, BodyRok, SKIMS, 7th Avenue, Läderach, and New Balance. The continued investment of entrepreneurs and business owners helps strengthen our local economy, create jobs, and contribute to the vibrant character of our city.
