Concord’s jazz roots go all the way back to 1969 when a local businessman, Carl Jefferson, initiated a small, outdoor music event called “Jazz in the Park Festival.” The event drew many of the popular jazz musicians of the day: Vince Guaraldi, Carmen McRae, Mel Torme, the Buddy Rich Band and more. To everyone’s surprise, more than 17,000 people showed up, and Concord’s legacy as a haven for jazz was on its way. Over the past 50 years, Concord and jazz music have become forever intertwined.
The 2021 Concord Jazz Festival comes alive with five special events being dubbed “Take 5”, in honor of Concord native and Jazz legend, Dave Brubeck, who claims the top-selling jazz single of all time, “Take Five”. These music-filled events are certain to engage and connect with the casual or passionate jazz fan.
The free events run Wednesday, August 4 – 7, and feature live performances at The Veranda, Music & Market at Todos Santos Plaza, the Concord Tap House, and Galindo Home & Gardens. A special open house at the Concord Visitor Center on Saturday, August 7 from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. will feature Dave Brubeck’s cool “Summer Sounds.”
The can’t-miss “Java & Jazz” Throwback celebration happens on Sunday, August 8 from 1-4 p.m. Presented by the Concord Historical Society, the event features the Matt Zebley Jazz Quartet performing live at the Galindo Home grounds. The $15 ticket price includes the show, a collectible cup and bottomless iced coffee and tea. Additional memorabilia and vendor booths will be on site. All proceeds benefit the Historical Society and tickets can be purchased in advance through Eventbrite.
The Concord Visitor Center offers exclusive Jazz Fest merchandise including a variety of t-shirts, pins and more. Plus, new this year, a collectible, illustrated Concord Jazz Landmarks poster is also available for sale. Proceeds from merchandise sales go to the Mount Diablo Music Education Foundation.
